Is it really so bad??
I finally could watch the Arsenio Hall show Performance of "You Come To My Senses" from early 1991, thanks to a lovely friend that sent me the video.
After many years of reading the various posts on these forums, regarding this TV perrformance, I was ready to see this disastrous, terrible, awesomely horrendous thing in which Jason failed miserably to sing the song and the rest of the band played so badly, specially Bill Champlin.
But I watched the presentation and....Surprise! The song really wasn't that bad!! I saw the video many times before posting this message, in order to have a solid point of view and have a good argument. Now I'm sure of what I think. I wanted to be the most objective possible, and I really think that the guys really passed the test. Sure, I won't say it was perfect, because it wasn't. But I really think the performance was okay, very passable, almost good. I would give them a 7.5 or an 8 out of ten, a 7 in the worst of cases. It's true that Bill Champlin touched a wrong note on the first chords of the introduction of the song, but all the rest of it was well played by all the Chiguys.
I have to say that YCTMS sounds very well live. I really enjoyed the sound, it was strong, convincent, with majestousity and greatness enough to be in a concert and on TV. It could have been a very good song to be played live, had they given it a second chance. I was fascinated.
Now, to Jason's performance. Like I said, I saw the performance many times and it definitely was not the bad singing I had read about so many times on the boards. Jason started with a little unsecurity, maybe it was the nerves or because the song is in a very high key. But then, Jason sang pretty well enough during most of the song. The color of his voice was so sweet, delicate and passionate. It had a certain grade of strenght. It was not perfect because, over the end of the song, when he sang the "oh oh oh oh's" his voice went a little out of tune. It occured the same on the first time he sang the line "You come to my senses". Certainly, YCTMS is written in a high tenor register and maybe Jason had a difficult time dealing with those hight notes, it could be caused by the lack of practice or rehearsal. But I think his voice had some power and it sounded beautiful during most of the song, in my honest opinion.
But, you know what was the best of it all? It was Jason's confidence on stage! Jason sang with so much charisma and conviction, if he was nervous it didn't notice. He acted like he had very much experience with the song. Definitely, Jason had a temendous stage presence at the time, and he continues to have it today. He was so sure of himself, he really did a good performance. And...he was more handsome than ever, with that long, curly, blonde hair, his tanned skin, his delicate face, his slender figure, his vest, his sweet smile. I was so impressed and fascinated to see him in this presentation. I really enjoyed it very much, and it was a sweet revange after being so hidden on Chicago's video clips.
This is my apreciation of the so called infamous You Come To My Senses performance. I don't think it was infamous at all. I thank God very much that Chicago did this song live, even though it was just once in all their career. I am very thankful I had the chance of watching this video, and I will treasure it forever.
