I had the pleasure of hearing the Lauren Scheff's album Cardboard Cindy, and I had a very nice, great surprise.
I have to recognize that, before hearing this cd, I was not a big fan of Alternative Music. I was some kind hesitant to open my ears and heart to this kind of music. I use to like melodic rock and easy listening much better, and, having such a strong fever by all the eighties/early nineties music, it was hard for me to start liking artists on the grundge rock/alternative rock scene.
I sometimes hear the modern rock on radio stations. I am aware of the work of bands like Creed, some Matchbook 20, hootie and the Blowfish, and over all, Coldplay, thanks to my younger brother. I was used to listening to those sort of bands on my brother's car. But they hadn't particularly caught my attention..unless some good Coldplay songs.
But , thanks to this Lauren Scheff cd, I started to appreciate alternative music, to look it with some new eyes, to understand its arrangements, their twists and turns, their esence. It's like a new, different world of music has finally opened for me. And I'm glad for that, because, though Alternative Music still sounds a little noisy, weird, and sometimes without emotion, at least I think that I will get a little more into that music , slow by slow, with time.
I think that Lauren's Cardboard Cindy album could easily fall into the category of "Alternative rock music". I don't know if he or someone else consider this album to be of another genre, but it someone can give me impressions about the sound of this cd, they will be very welcome! i imagine that this album has several influences of different kind of music.
To me, the arrangements well very well done, with a good edge, with some hardness to it, and even with some funny craziness to all of the arrangements. I think the music was really interesting...the intros, the outros, the way the music turned and twisted...It is like a new world of colors and strong, youthful energic sensations. Songs like "Half Way there", "Deep six holiday" and "Long Trip to nowhere" would fall into this category. There's some kind of strong anger and a calm, convincent attitude on the rock songs...like in "Deep sixth holiday" and "Half Way There". And there was some warmness, a little tenderness and even some hapiness on the romantic songs. Like in "Once In a million", "Take Me As I am" and "All we never had", that was some kind sad.
"Think Of Me" was some kind melancholic, so deep, it is a reflection song. I like it's calmness, orchestration and beauty.
"Talking Verse"...Very interesting, edgy, one of a kind tune!I liked the detail of the "phone conversation". It's wild, crazy, and I'm sure some persons could relate themselves with this track. The music really rocks here.
Years ago, at former Scheff dinner forum, I wrote that I would consider "Cardboard cindy" a mix of alternative music and power ballads, ..and I think Lauren agreed to some point. Now that i heard this cd in its whole form, I really think it's in fact, a mixture of alternative, modern power ballads, and hard rock, with some little metal influence.
Lauren's voice is soft, with a little raspiness to it, sweet, and full of sentiment. The boy really knows very well how to rock and belt out without so much exageration or acrobatic vocals, which I really appreciate.
Really, the music is great, and the songs has grown on me with time, and I find myself enjoying very much this cd. congratulations to Lauren Scheff, his band fellow members, and all the arrangers and songwriters that participated on this album.
